Sometimes, all it takes is a few words to change your life.
I like quick results and coach with 3, 2, or 1 word(s).
Another secret is that I primarily coach using pictures, symbols, and memories. That’s the language of the unconscious mind, where behavior can be easily altered.
Helping people change isn’t about telling them what to do or just giving them information.
I tell you, effective coaching can be done in 3 words.
Actually, it doesn’t necessarily even take that many…
3 words…
- “Is this true?”
- “Are you sure?”
- “You got it.”
2 words…
- “Show me.”
- “Says who?”
- “You can.”
1 word…
- “Why?”
- “Pause.”
- “Yes.”
Try these cues on yourself first!
For example, let’s say you’re feeling guilty about a behavior (“I shouldn’t have eaten that!”), or you’re scared to take an action (“I’ll probably fail.”).
Choose a phrase from above that fits your circumstance and see how you respond.
Often, we just need a little prompting to step back for a moment and view a situation for how it really is—versus how we’re perceiving it.
That has the potential to change everything…
… from your stress levels to your self-efficacy to your emotional state.
That’s just one quick coaching strategy you can try.
