The burpee, is a full body exercise used in strength training and as an aerobic exercise. The exercise is named in the 1930s for American physiologist Royal H. Burpee, who developed the burpee test.
The basic movement is performed from a standing position:
- Drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground.
- Kick your feet back into a plank position, while keeping your arms extended.
- Immediately return your feet to the squat position.
- Stand up from the squat position and jump

A CrossFit burpee (see picture): The athlete performs a standard four count burpee with the addition of a push up at the bottom, where the chest and thighs touch the floor, and jump at the top of the standing position.
